Arctiin inhibits adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells and decreases adiposity and body weight in mice fed a high-fat diet

Obesity is a major health problem because it can increase the risk of developing serious diseases such has diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. This study examined the effect of arctiin, a lignan extracted from Arctium lappa (burdock), on the formation of fat cells in vitro and “in vivo” using mice. The in vitro study demonstrated that arctiin significantly reduced accumulation of fat cells in 3T3-L1 cells (mice cells). Similarly, in the in vivo study, mice fed a high-fat diet along with doses of arctiin gained less weight than the mice fed the high-fat diet alone. This study suggests that arctiin can prevent obesity and thereby reduce the risks associated with excess body fat.
