Protective effects of Arctium lappa L. root extracts (AREs) on high fat diet induced quail atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in adults worldwide. Obesity is considered a leading risk factor with inflammation and oxidative stress exasperating the harmful effects. This study evaluated the effect of Arctium lappa root (burdock) extracts (using four different extraction methods) on atherosclerosis using quails fed a high fat diet. While Arctium lappa had no effect on weight, all four of the extracts had an antioxidant effect. Two extract methods in particular had a noticeable hypolipidemic effect, reducing both lipid and cholesterol levels. Results were compared to a widely used pharmaceutical drug and there was no significant difference in efficacy, suggesting that Arctium lappa could be a valid alternative therapy.
