Effect of Dose and Timing of Burdock (Arctium lappa) Root Intake on Intestinal Microbiota of Mice

Water soluble dietary fiber such as inulin provides nutrition to intestinal microbiota promoting good “gut health”. Arctium lappa (burdock) is a popular root vegetable consumed in Japan and is high in fructans, a major source of inulin. The primary goal of this study was to measure the effectiveness of Arctium lappa in promoting the microbiota in mice compared to pure inulin. Results showed that Arctium lappa was better at promoting microbiota diversity than the inulin alone and it is believed the additional bioactive molecules contained in Arctium lappa worked synergistically with the inulin to produce a more potent dose. Secondly, the researchers measured results when Arctium lappa was consumed and found that evening was better than morning.
