Overview of the anti-inflammatory effects, pharmacokinetic properties, and clinical efficacies of arctigenin and arctiin from Arctium lappa L

This article provides an overview of the pharmacology of Arctigenin and its glycoside version (arctigenin bound with sugar) called Arctiin with a focus on their anti-inflammatory effects and clinical efficacies. Arctigenin and Arctiin are the active ingredients of Arctium lappa, aka Burdock plant. The researchers concluded that the pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution and metabolism) of arctigenin is hindered by hydrolysis in the liver and intestines and efficacy is therefore reduced. They suggest that arctigenin should be administered through routes other than oral administration in order to maintain its efficacy and that more research is recommended given its powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
